I have to laugh at myself a little bit thinking about where I was two years ago â€" I distinctly remember telling a friend over the summer before my freshman year, “I am totally willing to forgo this summer so I can get to MIT as soon as possible. I can’t wait to get out of here.” I couldn’t have imagined all the changes that would happen in my life between then and now. I changed my lifestyle, my study habits, my idea of success, my attitude, my priorities, my values, my relationships â€" and I’m only halfway through college! The hardest change I had to make was hands-down living away from my family, which was honestly not something I had anticipated being all that difficult. I’d spent summers away from my parents and little brother, Ryan, and while I missed them, I didn’t experience too much homesickness because I was so busy and caught up in camp-life. I braced myself for all of the academic challenges I was going to face at MIT, reminding myself that I very well could fail some exams, would be staying up all night to finish p-sets I didn’t know how to do, and would relish in scoring “average” at MIT. Shockingly, academics really weren’t as bad as I was expecting (but having not been the best student at my high school, my expectations were pretty low) â€" instead, I found myself missing forced family dinnertime (no matter how busy I was, my parents would always make me eat dinner with them and Ryan), which before had annoyed me on plenty of occasions, and the podunk central Missouri that I†™d been so eager to leave. I missed the little things, like having something to come home to at the end of the day and someone to always ask me how my day was. Eating dinner with my roommate while watching reruns of The Office on Hulu was fun, but it wasn’t the same. Nothing depressed me more than to crave some of Mom’s cooking and head down to the dining hall only to find that the day’s dinner choices were so lackluster that I couldn’t even make out what they were (dont worry, the foods usually not that bad). Without a doubt, I still loved MIT and met some great friends, but I was rearing to bust out of Logan airport every time a break would come around, and I’d always dread returning to the sight of skyscrapers and the ‘tute’s dome once the break ended. I left MIT the day after my finals ended on both occasions freshman year, not looking back and not sorry to leave the Masochistic Institute of Technology. Dont worry if Im freaking you out with all this talk of MIT not actually being a perfect utopia. I think a lot of people here can relate to this sentiment, but a lot of people would probably laugh at me for being so weaksauce it takes some people all of two seconds to call MIT their home. As for me I’m writing this entry a week after leaving MIT, sleep-deprived not from the stress of finals but from the stress of packing. I’ve always hated suitcases and airports for all the goodbyes they remind me of and for once this year, I hated saying bye to MIT. I was unusually sluggish, unwilling to accept the fact the year was over, that I had to leave the strangely-lovable hellhole that the rest of the world calls ‘MIT.’ Empty boxes were left strewn about my room my last night there, along with un-packed picture frames, lamps and clothes as I instead opted to goof off with my hallmates. Last year, my friends and I joked as we left, “only three more years!” but this time around, we exclaimed “only two more years” with a newfound sense of panic and gloom. Im in a different world now, the land of humidity, tornadoes, cicada invasions, little brothers, neighborhood block parties and no p-sets. After your four years of this place, or of any college, it won’t be the p-sets or the Nobel Laureates or the classes or the exam that you left half-blank that you’ll remember. You’ll remember Steven, who is terrible at drawing but still leaves notes of encouragement with cheesy Batman quotes under your door (“It’s always the darkest before daybreak â€" feel better!”). You’ll remember Sasha and Adrian, the guys you jam with when you don’t feel like doing work, and you’ll remember how you all always talked about starting a band with them without ever actually starting a band with them. You’ll remember your secret handshake with Luke. You’ll remember your roommate Sneha, who has seen you at your worst and… not worst (and still puts up with you because she’s a great roommate). You’ll remember your twin, Maita, who â€" regardless of how much work either of you have to do â€" you always talk to about your day at the end of every night. You’ll remember the fres hmen who inspire you (see? Upperclassmen can be nice), the grad students you look up to, and the professors who cared about you enough to tell you they believe in you. You might even remember your bosses, because even though you’d never tell it to their face, they’re actually really awesome. You’ll remember the people. No matter where you go, you’ll have different types of friends and different kinds of relationships with people â€" you’ll have the friends that you see in class, the ones you work on p-sets with. There are the people you awkwardly smile at in the Infinite Corridor because youve-only-met-once-during-freshman-orientation-and-does-that-merit-a-smile-or-wave-or-nod-in-the-hall?? There are the shenanigan-friends, the ones you stay up with racing desk chairs. There are your hallmates, the ones you eat dinner with (if they’re as adorable as mine), the ones you sit with at night in the lounge while you all do homework (because even though none of you are taking the same classes, at least you’ll be there for moral support!). Then there are your brothers and sisters, the ones who hold you accountable, the ones who make you better people, the ones who encourage you and the ones who are there when life gets craptastic. Don’t let me deceive you â€" there will be the people you can’t stand and the people you end up cussing out (and subsequently scaring the rest of your hall) because at MIT and anywhere in this world, you will meet people you don’t like. Hey, not everyone you meet can be your best friend. When I had my MIT interview 2.5 years ago (eep!), I asked my EC about how much support he got when he was a student here. He answered, MIT does not hold your hand. At all. But if you really want help and look for it yourself, youll get it. Asking for help (or advice) is one bitter pill for an MIT student to swallow, but I definitely know that I survive this place with the help of my friends, at the very least. But before I get too sickeningly sentimental (okay, okay I know I was at the point at I am a creature of habit -I’m only gone for a couple months, after all â€" and then I’ve got two whole years left!), I’ll wrap things up here. For you recent-high school graduates â€" as weird and difficult and frustrating as college can get, you’re in for some of the most memorable four years of your life. Even when the components of the Criminal Justice system are working to accomplish the same objective they work in different fields and the job of each component is very different from the others. The Criminal Justice System refers to a collection of federal, state, and local public agencies that are created to deal with criminals (The Structure of Criminal Justice. 2013). There is a distance inside the relationship of the three components and this distance brings benefits and failures into the process. There are certain benefits that are created due to the distance between each component of the Criminal Justice system. The nature of the courts and the job they perform in the process of enforcing justice into society makes the courts an authority to regulate the work of police officers and correctional officers. Crime looks very different from the perserpective of a police officer, a judge will have to see the entire situation from a different point of view (Peak, 2012. p9). This is very helpful to guarantee police officers and correctional officers are going to perform their job according to what the law dictates. The distance is created naturally because the three components have to deal with different issues in order to accomplish their goal. Even when they do not perform the same activities they need each other because they are connected following the same purpose. The police needs the courts to process and take care of the suspects once they are taken into custody, the same way the courts need the corrections to deal with the inmates once they have been sentenced. It is also said that the Criminal Justice â€Å"agencies often fail to coordinate their activities and, thereby, ignore the impact that their decisions will have on other agencies† (The Structure of Criminal Justice. 2013). The relationship between the three components is not always fluent and this can cause mistakes and make the entire process more slow than what it should be. As a matter of fact, this failure can affect society at many different levels because every single component has its own process and this bureaucracy existing inside the components and between them forces every step to have a procedure. Some critics believe the distance existing in the relationship between police, the courts and corrections is necessary. Because Criminal justice agencies set their own policies they can affect the timing and the procedures of the other components. The existence of a different process within each component forces every single one of them to make sure and to guarantee they are performing their job correctly. The courts will not accept a case where the police officers acted illegally in order to obtain the evidence and they will not make use of the corrections to sentence these individuals. At the same time, the courts need to guarantee the entire court session is done as required by the law in order to sentence the suspect. The Criminal Justice system nature is to work with three different components connected by the same purpose, and at the same time each component is divided because they all have to deal with crime and the task of reducing crime rates in different ways. This might be the reason why the system has evolved into what it is today and this could be the best way police, the courts and corrections are supposed to work with each other. Police officers need to be restricted by the law and all the possible legal challenges their cases could face in a court room. The same legal restrictions apply to the correctional officers to guarantee they are protecting the integrity of the inmates and they are doing the best to help them in the rehabilitation process. THE POLICE The police is the force that has the authority and liability to protect the community. Every police department is organized and every single individual who makes part of it has his own function and area of expertise. The police departments are divided in many different units to deal with every possible way of breaking the law. â€Å"The organization of these agencies includes a number of specialized units (patrol, traffic, records)† (Peak, 2012. p58). Since every single unit is working on the same purpose there is a system within the police component. The police departments are organized as a military institution with a chain of command that takes decisions and give orders and subordinates who are responsible of following every order. The role of this chain of command â€Å"is to ensure that these units work together to reach a common goal† (Peak, 2012. p58). This division of labor allows every unit to specialize in their own field and to improve the way they do their job because they will become experts in that area. Once the specialized units apprehended a suspect and they gather the necessary evidence to judge him they are required to transfer this suspect into a court room. In the court room a judge will analyze and study all the evidence gathered in the case and this is when the relationship between the police and the courts is created. Both components exist to make sure justice is enforced in the community, they will share all the information (such as evidence, criminal background) necessary in order to guarantee the process has been done correctly from the moment the suspect was arrested until the judge or the jury make a decision on what the sentence should be or if the suspect is found innocent. This is the part when the police depends on the courts to fulfill their mission. THE COURTS The Courts are the place where justice is made. â€Å"The purposes of the courts are to seek justice and to discover the truth† (The Structure of Criminal Justice. 2013). Once the truth has been discovered thanks to the evidence presented by the police the court will sentence the suspect to pay his debt with society for breaking the laws created to make sure individuals live respecting everybody else. The courts are the place where â€Å"judges, court reporters, clerks, bailiffs, witnesses, plaintiffs, defendants, attorneys, juries, and spectators, as well as police officers, social workers, probation officers, guardians, interpreters and the press† (Peak, 2012. p135) get together to study and witness a case and analyze the ways an individual broke the law and the sentence that should be given in order to guarantee justice is done the right way. Depending on the case the judge or the jury will analyze the evidence presented by the police and the criminal investigators. At the court every possible legal challenge will be analyzed as well. The mistakes in acquiring evidence are called legal challenges and they are taken very seriously, sometimes they could end up in the release of a criminal because some mistake was committed in the investigation process. A legal challenge could appear in anything involved with the handling and gathering of the evidence presented by the investigators. Once the case has been properly studied, the courts will send the criminal to a correctional facility where correctional officers will make sure the inmate is rehabilitated. This relationship between the courts and the corrections is the last step of the Criminal Justice system. The fact that everything started with the police arresting the suspect and ended with the courts sending the inmate to a correctional creates a relationship between the three components. CORRECTIONS The main objective of sending citizens who broke the law to a correctional facility is â€Å"to protect society from crime by safely and securely handling criminal offenders while providing offenders some opportunities for self-improvement and increasing the chance that they will become productive and law-abiding citizens† (Peak, 2012. p205). Some critics tend to believe corrections are not the right answer to deal with criminals due to the fact that not every criminal achieves rehabilitation in a correctional facility. Prisons are organized institutions, the same as the police and the courts who are organized in different sectors to divide all their responsibilities. These sectors could be seen as the specialized units created by the police to deal with every possible crime, the only difference is that in the prisons every office has one responsibility like human resource management division, health care or medical division, administration division and many others created to guarantee every single step of the process is done accurately and according to the law. (Peak, 2012. p205). Having an inmate locked up after committing a crime offers different benefits to society. The danger of having people who break the law on the streets could be very high and making sure they are secured under the supervision of professionals makes everybody feel safer. This is the last step of the Criminal Justice system and it is also where the relationship between the police, the courts and the prisons ends. This step could also be seen as the accomplishment of the entire mission of enforcing justice in society. This relationship and all the connections and procedures where the Criminal Justice system components have to deal and complement each other can be affected by certain rules created by each component and the independence they all have from each other. Why are the three components independent from each other? The three components of the Criminal Justice are independent because they fight crime in different ways. â€Å"Each system component—police, courts, and corrections—has varying degrees of responsibility and discretion for dealing with crime† (Peak, 2012. p6). These degrees of responsibility separates the police officers, the judges and the correctional officers to the point where every institution creates their own procedures to deal with crime and to perform the function they are given in the entire Criminal Justice System. This independence between every single component offers a benefit that could be the same reason why the independence exists. In democracy the government needs to make sure no individual and no institution has total control over any matter. Even the president of the United States powers are regulated by other politicians within the same government. If the three components were put together as one the society could face a big problem because the Criminal Justice system will not be under control. The police officers, the judges and the correctional officers will all be co workers and with this they could lose objectivity by acting guided by other reasons different than justice itself. The fact that the three components are independent from each other protects society from corruption, police abuse, unfair sentences and bad treatment in the correctional facilities. â€Å"Relations among and between these components are often characterized by friction, conflict, and deficient communication† (Peak, 2012. p5). This friction and conflict could be the reason why the entire Criminal Justice system works the way it does. Every single component wants to perform its job correctly in order to keep up with the others, if one of them fails to do this the process of enforcing the law will be affected. On the other side the deficient communication is an issue that needs to be solved. â€Å"Prosecutors often complain that police provide case reports of poor quality.† (Peak, 2012. p5). At the same time Prosecutors and Public defendants are judged by their success in making the court sentence an individual or to drop the charges (Peak, 2012. p5). Corrections are seen by many as institutions where the inmates are not really well influenced. This could be caused due to the independence of all the components or simply because society has not found a better way to deal with crime. The way these components critic and interact with each other creates a competence and a challenge that can be very useful or very bad for everyone. â€Å"In the process of that interaction, conflicts arise. Although conflicts can serve positive ends, many of those In criminal justice tend to defeat the achievement of goals of the total system† (OLeary, V., Newman, D. J. (1970). The police knows the prosecutors will judge their cases and for this reason they are required to have solid reasons before they take an individual into custody. Police officers know their evidence will be challenged by the public defendant, and the judges know the prosecutors and the public defendants have the right to appeal the sentence. Every component is regulated by another. Overall the Criminal Justice system and the relationship between its three components create a process used by society to defend themselves from criminals and to keep these criminals away from their every day lives. Regardless of the miss-communication issues and conflicts existing already within the components they still complement each other. The police needs the courts and the corrections, the courts need the police and the corrections and the corrections need the police and the courts to have a purpose and to fulfill their mission and the responsibilities they have with society. Light vs. dark

In the myth of the cave Plato and Socrates discuss the theory of having prisoners trapped in a cave chained, in where they are shown figures of the world being cast by shadows. Until one of the prisoners is dragged out into the real world and he experiences a change in perspectives. After realizing how wrong his perspective of the world was, he decides to share this information with the rest of the prisoners that are still trapped in the darkness of the cave.The other prisoners were so full of their own perspective, disbelieving that there was a world different than what they believed in, that they threatened to kill him if he spoke another word of nonsense. The prisoner returned to the outside world and left the other prisoners in the darkness of their ignorant ways. In â€Å"A Very old Man With Enormous Wing†, one day as Pelayo is disposing of crabs in the ocean, he notices an angel lying in the sand ill, he decides to take him home and keeps the old man caged in his chicken coop. fter a ew days Pelayo and his wife Elisanda start to noticed that their ill son is cured and healthy. They seek help from the priest who believes he is the devil since he dint speak God's language. People came from far and close to see the old man with their own eyes. Elisanda saw a great opportunity and started to charge people admission to see the angel, making her and Pelayo wealthy that they build a new home for themselves. When the old man regained his health and strength he disappears never to be seen or heard from again. The characters in â€Å"A Very Old Man with EnormousWings†, by Gabriel Marquez relate to the characters in Plato's â€Å"Myth of the Cave† because they are blinded by their perspective and there are similarities in the surroundings from both of the stories. Perspective; a particular evaluation of a situation or facts, especially from one person's point of view, is both a positive and negative thing in both of the stories. In the beginning the prisoner had this perspective that he strongly believed that the shadows that he was being shown all his life were what the world consisted off. When he did get the chance to go into the real world, he was hesitant and had to be dragged out of the cave.Once he stepped out of the darkness of the cave, he saw the light and came to the conclusion that all this time he was wrong for thinking that way. He tried to share his knowledge with the others that believed that the prisoners they were in was the world of sight. It is then, when he steps back into the darkness once more that he realizes how ignorant people could be, Socrates himself once said â€Å"That the unexamined life is not worth living†. Not bothering to question the chance or possibility of their being another world than the one they believe to be real.In the case of Pelayo and Elisanda in the beginning their perspective about the old man was that he was gruesome looking and that he was dangerous. They planned o n letting him regain his strength and send him of to sea with enough food and water to last him for three days. After seeing that there ill son became healthy since the old man had arrive, the thought of him not being such a negative thing crossed their mind. They ended up becoming egan to spread that the old man had powers that could cure others illness, that it led a leper, a blind man, and a paralytic to come visit the old man hoping for a miracle for the price of a nickel.Leaving with a miracle they didn't have in mind; the blind man didn't recover his eye sight but he did grow three new teeth, the paralytic who didn't get to walk but almost won the lottery, and finally the leper whose sores sprouted sunflowers. In the end Pelayo and Elisanda changed their perspective on the old man being dangerous and having powers that made miracles happened, but lso changed their financial status they went from being poor to becoming so wealthy they were able to build a big house that keep th e crabs out.The surroundings in both of the stories can relate to each other. In Platos story the prisoners are trapped and chained inside a cave, while the old man was kept locked away inside a chicken coop. in both stories the prisoner and the angel are surrounded by people that are too arrogant to accept the fact that there might Just be a world that's different than what they believe in. If they were able to change their perspective and step outside of the darkness and into the light there whole life would have changed completely.As it did for the prisoner who got his freedom into a whole new world he was amazed and curious about, while Pelayo and Elisanda not only became used to the old man towards the end, but also became very wealthy because of him. Both Plato's and Marquez story's share similarities from the characters to even the surroundings, from being trapped in a cave to a chicken coop. The way the prisoner saw how completely rong his perspective of the world was, that it was more than Just shadows being cast on a wall.How Pelayo and Elisenda were once scared of the old man with enormous wings until they changed the way the saw the old man. That they even allowed their son to play inside the chicken coop with the angel, leading to both the old man and child to catch chicken pox together. Most importantly how Plato uses the darkness of the cave to represent the ignorance we could have if we don't bother to question the world we live in, and Marquez uses the money to symbolize the root of all evil.

Analysis Of David Thoreau s Walden - 1507 Words

â€Å"Walden† Bullhead City The Alaska Interior Chris McCandless admired Henry David Thoreau, author of â€Å"Walden,† and adopted many of his ideals as his own. McCandless sought for simplicity and desired to stray from social norms and clichà © material goods. Although Thoreau’s book was found in Chris’ trailer, he did not live step by step how Thoreau did. He ventured beyond these transcendentalist ideals, taking them to unheard of heights. While Thoreau sought a life in the wilderness to ponder both nature and the world (â€Å"Walden†), Chris went into the wilderness to explore the inner depths of his soul. Not long into his journey, Chris discovered that an extended stay in the wilderness inevitably directs one’s attention outward as much as it does inward, a theory Thoreau already was familiar with. Chris took Thoreau’s transcendentalist life and exemplified it. McCandless intentionally placed himself in an area of nature where there was no one else in close contact to help him. Thoreau’s Walden Pond was located within walking distance from a populated area (â€Å"Walden†). When McCandless had Franz drive him to his camp, out past Oh-My-God Hot Springs, Krakauer describes Alex’s location as â€Å"†¦another half mile out on the bajada† (Krakauer 50). Although people were living in areas nearby, no one inhabited them when he needed help towards the end of his life.
